Safe Havens, our local campaign

Safe Havens is our local campaign to bring small businesses and community spaces together to offer upfront, visible, real-time support to anyone facing racism, threats or harm.

Safe Havens is a community safety initiative launched by the Refugee Buddy Project in response to rising levels of hostility and fear faced by people from refugee and migrant backgrounds — particularly following far-right unrest in 2023.

What is a Safe Haven?

Safe Havens are local businesses and community venues that display a clear window sticker to show that they are a safe and supportive space for anyone who feels at risk of racism, harassment, or harm.

They offer immediate, visible reassurance and a point of connection for people experiencing distress or abuse in public spaces.

Inspired by successful Safe Haven models first developed in London to tackle gang-related violence, this approach brings together local residents, organisations, councils and police to create safer and more connected neighbourhoods.

“In many cities, Safe Havens reduced crime by up to 34% — but more importantly, they built a stronger sense of shared safety and responsibility.”

 — Krissie Nicholson, project lead and Refugee Buddy volunteer
